PRESERVE Study

Study Goals

01 Avoid Mastectomy and Preserve Womens’ Breast
To test if a second lumpectomy and a targeted short course of radiation (instead of mastectomy) can be safely and effectively used to treat a second cancer in the breast.
02 Improve Quality of Life
To test if targeting a smaller area of the breast where the cancer was located, rather than the whole breast, will lead to fewer side effects since less healthy tissue is affected, without compromising survival. This method of treatment may lead to a better quality of life and cosmetic results, helping women feel more comfortable and confident in their appearance after treatment.

03 Shorten Treatment Time
Historically, repeat radiation was given through lengthy treatment schedules, such as three weeks twice a day, or five weeks daily. These extended regimens can be inconvenient and costly for patients, especially those working, needing to pay for parking, or relying on family for transportation. A five-day, once-daily radiation course is now the standard of care for newly diagnosed women. We are testing whether this schedule can be safely and effectively used for repeat radiation treatment.
04 Advance Global Breast Cancer Care
To contribute to better treatment options for women worldwide with this type of breast cancer. By enrolling individuals from different countries and backgrounds, we can ensure this treatment is effective in all types of settings and for all types of patients.
